Belmont Stakes odds, predictions 2020: Surprising picks from top expert who’s nailed five straight races

The traditional format of the Triple Crown has been upended due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the 2020 Belmont Stakes now leading off the festivities on June 20. The 2020 Belmont Stakes field will be limited to 16 horses, the race will be run without fans, and it will also be contested at 1 1/8 miles instead of the traditional 1 1/2-mile distance. The remaining Triple Crown races, the 2020 Kentucky Derby and 2020 Preakness Stakes, are set for September and October, respectively.

The latest 2020 Belmont Stakes odds show undefeated Charlatan and Florida Derby winner Tiz The Law as 5-2 co-favorites. Nadal, who is 4-for-4 in his career, is next at 7-2. Charlatan and Nadal dominated their Arkansas Derby divisions and are trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert. Before making any horse racing picks, you’ll want to see the latest 2020 Belmont Stakes predictions from SportsLine’s Jody Demling.

A fixture in the horse racing world who has been writing about, talking about and betting on races for years, Demling enters the 2020 Belmont Stakes on a major heater on his horse racing picks. He has the picked the winner in five straight races: the Saudi Cup, Gotham Stakes, Rebel Stakes, Louisiana Derby and Florida Derby.

This is the same handicapper who hit the Oaks-Derby double at Churchill Downs nine times in the last 11 years. That means he held a ticket with the winners of both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby all but twice in his last 11 tries.

And when it comes to the Belmont, Demling has delivered plenty of memorable paydays. In 2017, he said 5-1 sleeper Tapwrit would beat the heavily-favored Irish War Cry. Demling was spot-on, winning not just his exacta, but also his trifecta and superfecta, which paid out nearly $4,500 on a $2 bet. In 2018 Demling was all-in on Justify to dominate the Belmont, and Justify went wire-to-wire to become just the 13th Triple Crown winner ever.

Now, Demling has released his early picks for the 2020 Belmont Stakes, predicting where every horse will finish. He’s sharing all of it at SportsLine.

2020 Belmont Stakes expert predictions

One surprise: Demling says Charlatan, the top Vegas favorite who’s 3-for-3 in his career, barely hits the board. The son of Speighstown, Charlatan “is super talented” but needs to mature more, according to Demling. He believes Charlatan could be ready to shine later this year, but isn’t worth the 5-2 premium you’ll need to pay for him right now.

Another curveball: Demling is high on Wells Bayou, even though he’s a long shot at 26-1 Belmont odds 2020. The son of 2010 Preakness Stakes winner Lookin At Lucky, Wells Bayou has two firsts and a second in four starts this year and has won three of six lifetime races. Demling didn’t like Wells Bayou’s fifth at the Arkansas Derby, but he beat a talented group that included fellow 2020 Belmont Stakes contender Modernist at the Louisiana Derby.

Wells Bayou also won his maiden special weight race in October 2019 before a victory in a claiming race in January that set him up for a strong year. Couple that with a second place finish in the Southwest Stakes by a length and Wells Bayou could be ready to bust out as one of the top 2020 Belmont Stakes contenders. Demling says Wells Bayou “will be in the mix” if he runs, and should be all over your 2020 Belmont Stakes bets.

How to make 2020 Belmont Stakes picks

Demling is high on a double-digit long shot, calling him a terrific closer who will be “flying in the end.” He’s only sharing which horse to back, and his entire projected 2020 Belmont Stakes leaderboard, here.
