Horse racing odds, predictions for May 23: Expert reveals top picks for Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park

Horse racing continues to take place daily during the coronavirus pandemic, and on Saturday the Eoin Harty-trained Salah will try to win for the first time in his career when he leaves the starting gate at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. A 4-year-old son of Macho Uno, Salah has three seconds and three thirds in 12 career starts. He is coming off a third-place finish on Feb. 28. Despite being winless, Salah has been installed as the 3-1 favorite in Race 9.

The race is included in Bob Weir’s four best bets for Saturday. A horse racing insider, Weir has scoured all of the races around the country on the day and locked in four horse racing best bets spanning Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park. Be sure to see his top horse racing picks before making any wagers on Saturday, May 23.

Based in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Weir has been handicapping and following horse racing since reading Andy Beyer’s landmark handicapping book “Picking Winners” in the late 1980s. Weir is highly invested in the Beyer speed figure, a number assigned to every race run by a horse that measures how fast the horse ran. He uses the figure as the backbone of his handicapping. In fact, thanks to his proficiency with speed figures and top-tier handicapping, he landed one of just eight spots on Beyer’s figure-making team in 2017, a position he holds to this day.

Weir’s methodology has produced multiple five-figure days. In 2014, he hit a $60,000 Pick 6 at Del Mar. The following year, he nailed a $31,000 Pick 6 at Gulfstream Park. In 2016 and 2017, Weir qualified for the prestigious National Horseplayers Championship in Las Vegas.

This year, his first for SportsLine, Weir has been on fire on his horse racing picks. In January, he crushed the Pegasus World Cup, giving out an $8 exacta and a $1 trifecta, winning $757.60. In February’s Sam F. Davis Stakes, he gave out a $0.50 superfecta that paid $150.75. In March, Weir correctly pegged Wells Bayou to win the Louisiana Derby.

He nailed the late Pick 4 at Gulfstream Park on April 9 and 10, hitting for $827.65 and $394.65, respectively. He cashed the Pick 4 again at the same track on April 30, May 2 and May 15. Anyone who has followed Weir this year is way up.

Now, Weir has scoured Saturday’s races across the country, found four best bets and constructed his tickets. He’s only sharing them here.

Top horse racing predictions for May 23

Weir is high on Way too Sweet, who’s listed at 3-1 in Race 6 at Santa Anita. This 3-year-old daughter of Empire Way has one win in two career starts. She is coming off a seventh-place finish in an optional claiming race on Jan. 11.

On Saturday Way too Sweet drops into a $12,500 claiming race. “With limited other speed signed on, this 3-year-old daughter of Empire Way has a clear way to the front end,” Weir tells SportsLine. “I’m expecting a wire-to-wire run here.”

Weir also is high on Posty, a 5-1 shot in Race 9 at Santa Anita. A 4-year-old son of Champ Pegasus, Posty has one second in four career starts. He earned that runner-up finish in his last start, in a maiden claiming race at Santa Anita on March 21.

On Saturday Posty will be stretching out to two turns for the first time. “He stayed close to the pace in a seven-furlong race last time and fought hard to the end,” Weir added,

In addition, Weir is high on a double-digit long shot at Gulfstream Park. This horse “is an expensive purchase who hasn’t panned out” but could light up the toteboard on Saturday. Weir’s including this horse in exactas and daily doubles, and so should you. He’s sharing his best bets only at SportsLine.
