2021 Bermuda Championship odds, picks, field, bets: PGA insider says back Patrick Reed, fade Matt Fitzpatrick

The Bermuda Championship is still a fairly new event on the PGA Tour with the inaugural tournament happening in 2019. The two previous winners broke lengthy slumps, and many will be trying to follow suit when the 2021 Bermuda Championship tees off Thursday at Port Royal Golf Club. Defending champion Brian Gay got his first PGA Tour victory since 2013 at Port Royal last season, shooting a final-round 64. He then birdied the first playoff hole to beat Wyndham Clark. The runner-up finish was Clark’s career best on tour. Brendon Todd broke a five-year drought when he won the event in 2019. The 2021 Bermuda Championship field, made up mostly of up-and-coming stars and aging veterans, could produce another surprise winner this weekend.

Caesars Sportsbook lists Matt Fitzpatrick as the 14-1 favorite in its latest 2021 Bermuda Championship golf odds, with Christiaan Bezuidenhout the second choice at 16-1. Among the other notable players expected to contend from the 2021 Bermuda Championship field are former Masters champion Patrick Reed (20-1) and Chilean rising star Mito Pereira (25-1). Before you lock in your 2021 Bermuda Championship picks or make any PGA Tour predictions, you need to see what proven golf insider Sal Johnson has to say.

The media legend and esteemed golf insider has a strong track record on picks, and he knows what it takes to win. Before last week’s Zozo Championship outside Tokyo, Johnson tabbed Hideki Matsuyama among his best bets.

“You know he is looking to showcase his game in front of the home crowd,” the golf expert told SportsLine of the Japanese star. “This could be his personal U.S. Open.”

He was right on the money. Matsuyama, already a hero in his home country after winning the Masters in March, fired a final-round 65 that included an eagle from 8 feet on the final hole. He trailed by one with eight holes to play on Sunday and won by five strokes.

Johnson is off to a strong start overall this season. Before the Shriners, he named both Sungjae Im and Matthew Wolff among his players to watch. Im shot a 9-under 62 in the final round for a comfortable four-shot win, and Wolff finished as runner-up, his first top-10 finish in almost exactly a year.

The previous week at the Sanderson Farms Championship, Johnson nailed Sam Burns as his winner. Anyone who has followed Johnson’s advice has cashed in huge.

Now Johnson, the first producer of “Inside the PGA Tour,” a longtime ABC Sports golf producer who worked with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, and founder of the world’s top golf stats database, has released his highly confident 2021 Bermuda Championship golf picks, and they will surprise you. You can only see Johnson’s expert PGA picks at SportsLine.

Top 2021 Bermuda Championship golf predictions

In a major shock, Johnson is fading Fitzpatrick, who won two weeks ago at Valderrama and is the favorite. The Englishman will be making his first tour start this season. He had as many missed cuts as top-10’s in the last campaign and didn’t make the top-25 in his final four. He is accurate off the tee but isn’t as strong with his irons (147th in greens in regulation). He might take time to adjust and has been inconsistent, so Johnson will be going in another direction.

On the other hand, the stats guru knows Reed has a grinding mentality and has had success on some of the windiest courses on tour. He has victories at Kapalua, Doral and Torrey Pines in his career, and his experience will give him an edge in a field loaded with young players. The 31-year-old has nine career tour wins, including the Farmers Insurance Open last season. He finished in the top-25 in 14 of his 23 tournaments last season, including six times in the top 10.

Johnson also wants to see what Pereira can do to follow up his three Korn Ferry Tour victories last season to earn his automatic promotion. The 26-year-old also made the seven-man playoff for bronze at the Tokyo Olympics this summer and was eliminated on the third extra hole. He finished third at the Fortinet Championship in his season debut and followed that with a T-31 at the Sanderson Farms and T-40 at the Shriners. He is 39-under over his first three events of the season.

How to make 2021 Bermuda Championship golf picks

For this week’s event in Bermuda, the golf expert is backing a huge long shot who comes in at well over 60-1. This veteran has had some big successes in windy conditions over the course of his career. And while his recent results haven’t been notable, he has been known to win when least expected. He could pull off a shocking result, and anyone who backs this underdog could cash in huge. You can only see this Bermuda Championship pick and the rest of Johnson’s PGA analysis at SportsLine.
