2021 PGA Championship Fantasy golf rankings, picks: Back Rory McIlroy, fade Bryson DeChambeau

Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth will be among the top players to watch when the 2021 PGA Championship tees off Thursday on the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. The South Carolina course hosted the event in 2012, and McIlroy ran away with that tournament. McIlroy also comes in off his first win in 18 months, taking the title at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow two weeks ago. Spieth, meanwhile, is trying to become the sixth golfer all-time to win the career grand slam. Who can you trust in your 2021 PGA Championship fantasy golf rankings, and which fantasy golf picks should you prioritize?

Will McIlroy or Spieth live up to the hype as part of your 2021 PGA Championship fantasy golf strategy, or will world No. 1 Dustin Johnson (20-1) find his form and give you a better chance to win your fantasy golf lineups? Before you make any 2021 PGA Championship Fantasy golf picks, check out the latest Fantasy golf rankings from data scientist Rick Gehman

With his expansive database of golf statistics, course data and betting odds, Gehman creates advanced models and back-tests them constantly. These models have produced 12 outright winners in the past 18 months and three this season, including Viktor Hovland at 25-1 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic and Daniel Berger at 20-1 at Pebble Beach.

Last week at the AT&T Byron Nelson, three of his top seven golfers finished in the top 10, including runner-up Sam Burns. And the previous week at Quail Hollow, four of Gehman’s top 14 golfers finished in the top 10, including McIlroy, who won the event to break an 18-month victory drought.

Gehman has been on fire all season. At the Zurich Classic team event in New Orleans last month, five of Gehman’s top eight finished T-8 or higher, including Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, who lost in a playoff. At the Masters, three of Gehman’s top eight picks finished in the top five. That included Spieth and Xander Schauffele, who tied for third. Three of his top seven at The Players made the top 10, and at Pebble Beach, three of his top four had top-five finishes. Anyone who has followed his advice has cashed in huge.

Now, Gehman, co-host of “The First Cut” podcast on CBS Sports, has revealed his top 30 players for the 2021 PGA Championship over at SportsLine so you can win big with your Fantasy golf picks

2021 PGA Championship Fantasy golf picks

Gehman is very high on McIlroy this week on a course where he has dominated before. He wasn’t dominant in his Well Fargo victory, but winning breeds confidence, and the Northern Irishman should have an abundance of it heading to this course. He set a tournament record for margin of victory, shooting 13 under to win by eight here in 2012. He is second on tour in driving distance (318.8), fifth in strokes gained off the tee and 13th tee-to-green. He has three-top-10s in his past five full-field events and has shot no worse than 68 in his past three rounds.

Bryson DeChambeau leads the tour in distance, but Gehman isn’t nearly as sold on him and is fading him this week. The golf expert told SportsLine that Dechambeau is “just as likely to miss the cut as he is to win the PGA Championship,” and that’s why he isn’t ranked in Gehman’s top five. The reigning U.S. Open champ averages 322 yards off the tee, but he is 172nd in driving accuracy (55.24 percent) and 198th in distance from the edge of the fairway (35.5 feet). Players can get into plenty of trouble with wayward drives at Kiawah Island.
