Why UTEP can cover

The Miners came out the gate strong with wins in back-to-back weeks against New Mexico State and Bethune-Cookman. UTEP is averaging 34 points a game and 462 yards of total offense. The Miners average 246 rushing yards a game with 5.3 yards a carry. UTEP’s running back committee has been impressive thus far.

Redshirt junior Ronald Awatt is the Miners’ leading rusher through the first two games. Awatt has 30 carries for 203 yards and two touchdowns. He is also averaging 100 yards rushing a game with 6.7 yards a carry. Freshman running back Willie Eldridge has made the most of his early opportunities. Eldridge has rushed for 124 yards on 18 carries, averaging 6.8 yards a carry. The Miners will look to establish the run game against the Broncos, and if they can, that’ll give them a great chance to keep this game within the spread.

Why Boise State can cover

The Broncos came out firing last week in their matchup against UCF. Boise State jumped out to a 21-0 lead before falling short 36-31. Boise State had 283 total yards of offense with the majority coming through the air. Junior quarterback Hank Bachmeier completed 64 percent of his passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns.

The Broncos struggled to run the ball last week, so expect that to be a point of emphasis in this matchup. The successful rushing attack will take some pressure off of Bachmeier and allow the receivers to have more one-on-one matchups. Look for Bachmeier to exploit these matchups when given the opportunity.
