Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec will likely miss the remainder of the 2021 season after suffering a significant hand injury in Saturday’s 45-28 win over UMass. Jurkovec posted a photo on Instagram of his hand and wrist heavily bandaged after surgery on Monday.
Jurkovec injured his wrist during the first quarter of Boston College’s victory over the Minutemen. After BC scored on its first two possessions, the Eagles had multiple fumbles and punts derail its offense against one of the worst defenses in college football.
The junior has been a revelation at Boston College since transferring from Notre Dame. Jurkovec threw for 2,558 yards, 17 touchdowns and just five interceptions in a breakout campaign. His second year with the Eagles started with 325 yards and three touchdowns before the injury. Jurkovec is 8-4 as a starting quarterback with Boston College with all four losses coming against ranked opponents.
Jurkovec was the first Boston College player with four or more 300-yard games in one season since Matt Ryan. If Jurkovec misses the rest of the 2021 season, he will likely be eligible for an injury redshirt. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. ranks Jurkovec No. 10 on his list of draft-eligible quarterbacks.
With Jurkovec sidelined, Boston College turns to redshirt senior Dennis Grosel. The Willoughby, Ohio, native started seven games in 2019, completing 48.4% of his passes for 983 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions.
Boston College travels to face Temple at 12 p.m. ET in Philadelphia on Saturday before playing its first Power Five game against Missouri on Sept. 25.
