Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant lands on Showtime PPV to determine an undisputed super middleweight champion

After failing to work out the details for a September fight, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Caleb Plant have come to an agreement for a clash on Nov. 6. The fight will air live on Showtime pay-per-view from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Alvarez holds the WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles while Plant holds the IBF version of the belt. The fight between the two will crown an undisputed champion at 168 pounds, the first time the weight class has had an undisputed champion in the four-belt era.

Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KO) is riding a seven-fight winning streak since a September 2017 draw with Gennady Golovkin. Since that fight, Alvarez has won championships at middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight, most recently scoring an eighth-round stoppage of Billy Joe Saunders in May to add the WBO super middleweight title to his collections.

“At the end of the day, this is what I want to do with my career, make history,” Canelo said in a press release. “These things, like becoming the first to be the unified champion at 168 pounds, is making history. To potentially be one of the few who holds this prestigious honor in any weight class makes me very happy. For my country, this would be a huge accomplishment. I want to be remembered as one of the greatest in the history of the sport.”

Plant (21-0, 12 KO) has emerged as a rising star in recent years, winning his IBF championship in January 2019 against Jose Uzcategui. Since becoming champion, Plant has faced some controversy for the quality of his title defenses, defeating Mike Lee, Vincent Feigenbutz and Caleb Truax before finally securing his shot at the sport’s top star and pound-for-pound best fighter.

Negotiations between the two sides fell apart in July, with disputes over rematch clauses among the last-minute reasons the fight couldn’t be made for the originally targeted Sept. 18 date.
