Why Kyler Murray, A.J. Green ‘weren’t on same page’: Cardinals WR missed audible on final play, per report

The Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers gave us one of the most entertaining matchups of the entire season, as a short-handed Aaron Rodgers delivered Kyler Murray and the Cards their first loss in a 24-21 thriller on “Thursday Night Football.”

Arizona had the ball on Green Bay’s 5 yard line with 15 seconds left, down three points, and head coach Kliff Kingsbury opted to attempt one more pass at the end zone in case they could win the game outright without needing overtime with a field goal. Instead, wide receiver A.J. Green did not see the ball coming his direction, and Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas made a great play by reeling in the game-winning interception.

According to Jim Trotter of NFL Media, one source familiar with the situation said Kingsbury dialed up a pass to the left, but Murray saw a better matchup to the right with Green on Douglas. Murray then apparently signaled for a back-shoulder fade to Green, but Green did not see the audible — which is why he didn’t turn around when the ball was in the air, as he believed the pass was going to the other side of the field.

“I honestly don’t know, just a miscommunication,” Murray said about the play after the game. “I couldn’t tell you, but you know, we just gotta be better.”

Murray was also asked if he had spoken to Green about the costly miscommunication.

“No,” Murray said, via NFL.com. “I know he’s hot — emotions running high. Obviously, after the fact it’s … you know, we both know, we weren’t on the same page and it cost us. We will be better because of it.”

It was quite the gut punch to suffer at home in primetime, but the Cardinals still possess first place in the NFC West. They may have fallen behind the Packers for home-field advantage in the NFC, but there’s a lot of football left to be played.
