Who’s Playing

Bowling Green @ Buffalo

Current Records: Bowling Green 2-6; Buffalo 4-4

What to Know

The Bowling Green Falcons haven’t won a contest against the Buffalo Bulls since Nov. 25 of 2016, but they’ll be looking to end the drought Saturday. The Falcons and Buffalo will face off in a Mid-American battle at noon ET at UB Stadium. The Bulls should still be riding high after a victory, while Bowling Green will be looking to regain their footing.

Bowling Green found themselves the reluctant recipients of an unpleasant 55-24 punch to the gut against the Eastern Michigan Eagles last week. Bowling Green was down 45-17 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from. QB Matt McDonald wasn’t much of a difference maker for Bowling Green; McDonald threw one interception.

Meanwhile, Buffalo simply couldn’t be stopped last week, as they easily beat the Akron Zips on the road 45-10. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Bulls had established a 45-10 advantage. Their QB Kyle Vantrease was on fire, passing for three TDs and 241 yards on 21 attempts in addition to punching in one rushing touchdown.

Buffalo’s defense was a presence as well, as it embarrassed Akron’s offensive line to sack the QB 11 times for a total loss of 63 yards. Leading the way was DE Kyler Laing and his 3.5 sacks. Those were the first sacks for Laing this season.

Bowling Green have to know they’ll be fighting an uphill battle given the 13.50 point spread they are up against. Those burned by picking them against the spread last week might want to keep in mind that the squad has not yet dropped back-to-back games against the spread this season.

The Falcons are now 2-6 while the Bulls sit at 4-4. A pair of defensive stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: Bowling Green is stumbling into the matchup with the 231st most rushing touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 15 on the season. Buffalo is completely their equal: they are 231st worst in the nation in rushing touchdowns allowed, with 15 on the season. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
