Saints’ Taysom Hill taking first-team reps at quarterback, signaling potential change, per report

The New Orleans Saints appear to be signaling that there is a change at quarterback on the horizon. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Taysom Hill is taking the first-team reps at practice this week leading up to New Orleans’ Week 13 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football. Fellow quarterback Trevor Siemian — who has started the last four games — is currently taking the second-team reps.

This would suggest that the Saints are giving Hill every opportunity to be the team’s starter in Week 13. However, Rapoport does point out that Hill has been battling a foot injury and would need to make it through the week healthy to actually line up under center. Hill has been battling that foot injury dating back to Week 5 and caused him to miss two games. He’s been active for New Orleans the previous two weeks but hasn’t played a snap at this point.

In the Saints’ blowout loss to the Bills on Thanksgiving, there were chants for the Saints to deploy Hill, but Sean Payton did note postgame that he wasn’t an option to play at quarterback due to that injured foot. Now that Hill has had another week to rest up, however, it looks like the club will be giving him the inside track to start.

Part of the reason for the looming change has been Siemian’s struggles as of late. Over the last two games, he’s completed just 56.5% of his passes for 377 yards, four touchdowns and three picks. If Hill gets the starting nod, Siemian will almost certainly serve as QB2 with rookie Ian Book as the third string option.

The Saints will take on the Cowboys from the Caesars Superdome on Thursday at 8:20 p.m. ET.
