After three consecutive Bundesliga defeats, RB Leipzig’s loss to Union Berlin could be the straw that broke the camel’s back. The side went behind in the sixth minute due to a goal from Taiwo Awoniyi, creating another match where they would have to climb back into things. Leipzig did get one back via Christopher Nkunku scoring from outside the box, but they collapsed on a corner to allow Timo Baumgartl to score the eventual winner for Union Berlin. This caused RB Leipzig Head of Soccer Oliver Mintzlaff to say to DAZN, “It’s a catastrophic performance.”
At that moment, the writing was on the wall for Marsch’s future at the club and now Sportbuzzer in Germany is reporting that Leipzig has decided to move on from their manager.. It has been a weird season as Leipzig has been in most matches this season but the results haven’t gone their way. After taking over this past summer, it seems like March’s reign will end after only 22 games in charge following an exceptional performance with RB Salzburg.
With the winter break beginning in Germany on December 18th, this would give them time to figure out who will take over and also give that person time to get their philosophies across to the team. They’ll also need to figure out what to do with Caden Clark as he’ll be joining in January from New York Red Bulls. While Clark could be sent out on loan, if he proves that he can help now, that could be an immediate jolt to the midfield.
Even with their struggles, Leipzig is a top four or five squad in the Bundesliga by a number of metrics. They’ve scored the fifth most goals, 25, from the second most expected goals 27.67 so there’s plenty of talent. They have the fourth highest possession percentage in the league at 56.5% as well. After three straight losses Marsch’s side dropped into the bottom half of the table so the move is understandable from that regard, but with a +7 goal difference, whoever takes over Leipzig, should Marsch indeed be shown the door, will inherit a side that seems to have a lot more talent than results suggest.
