What you need to know about the Grizzlies

The Grizzlies were within striking distance but couldn’t close the gap on Sunday as they fell 105-100 to the Portland Trail Blazers. Small forward Desmond Bane had a pretty forgettable game, playing for 33 minutes but putting up just nine points on 4-for-12 shooting. The loss ended Memphis’ five-game winning streak but it has still gone 10-2 over its last 12 games.

All 12 of those games have come without Ja Morant (knee), who coach Taylor Jenkins says is “getting really close” to returning to game action. The Grizzlies are a balanced team that ranks fifth in offensive ranking while also playing a hectic style of defense. Memphis leads the NBA with 10.4 steals per game and also ranks third with 5.9 blocks per contest.

What you need to know about the Thunder

Meanwhile, Oklahoma City escaped with a win this past Saturday against the Los Angeles Clippers by the margin of a single free throw, 104-103. Oklahoma City’s small forward Luguentz Dort looked sharp as he had 29 points in addition to five rebounds. Rookie Josh Giddey filled up the stat sheet as the No. 6 overall pick had eight points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists.

OKC is roughly league average on the defensive end, but it really struggles with efficiency on the offensive end. The Thunder rank last in offensive rating, last in points per game and last in field goal percentage. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads the team with 21.6 PPG on 41.3 percent shooting but he’s taken a step back after averaging 23.7 PPG on 50.8 percent shooting last season.
