The Christmas break combined with COVID-19 cancellations has created a world in which we’ve gone a week without a game between two ranked Division I men’s basketball teams. It’s been boring. But, hopefully, we’ll break our streak of uninteresting matchups Wednesday because there are three Top 25 matchups on the books (for now).

They are …

  • LSU at Auburn
  • Seton Hall at Providence
  • Tennessee at Alabama

Each of those schools is listed in Wednesday morning’s updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings. Auburn is No. 8. Tennessee is No. 13. Seton Hall is No. 16. LSU is No. 17. Providence is No. 23. Alabama is No. 24. In total, there are 11 ranked teams scheduled to play Wednesday.

Each ranked-team vs. ranked-team matchup is intriguing for various reasons — but I’m especially interested in LSU at Auburn because it’ll be LSU’s first game against a top-50 KenPom opponent this season, and it’ll come against an Auburn squad led by freshman phenom Jabari Smith, who has emerged as a legitimate candidate to be the No. 1 overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-10 forward is averaging 16.2 points and 7.2 rebounds in 26.9 minutes per game while shooting 45.2% from 3-point range on 5.2 attempts per contest. He’s been incredible. So Will Wade’s Tigers will likely have to figure out a way to contain Smith if LSU is to remain one of the nation’s five unbeaten teams. If they don’t, the number of unbeaten teams will likely drop to four.

LSU-Auburn is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
