The West Virginia Mountaineers and the #17 Texas Longhorns are set to square off in a Big 12 matchup at noon ET Jan. 1 at Frank Erwin Special Events Center. The teams split their matchups last year, with the Longhorns winning the first 72-70 on the road and West Virginia taking the second 84-82.
The Mountaineers entered their contest last week as the heavy favorite, and they fully lived up to expectations. Everything went their way against the Youngstown State Penguins as they made off with an 82-52 win. West Virginia’s guard Sean McNeil was one of the most active players for the squad, picking up 23 points.
Meanwhile, Texas couldn’t have asked for better way to wrap up 2021 than the 78-33 stomp they got at home against the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Tuesday. Forward Tre Mitchell and forward Dylan Disu were among the main playmakers for Texas as the former had 14 points in addition to six boards and the latter dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds along with five blocks.
Their wins bumped West Virginia to 11-1 and Texas to 10-2. After both teams made easy work of their previous opponents, one of them is set up to suffer a discouraging change of fortune.
