Why Georgia can cover
After giving up fewer than eight points in four of their final five regular-season contests, the Bulldogs were uncharacteristically generous against Alabama in the conference title game. They returned to form against Michigan in the Orange Bowl, however, limiting a Wolverines team that had scored at least 42 points in its previous three outings to a field goal until late in the fourth quarter en route to a 34-11 triumph. Georgia has allowed a nation-low average of 9.5 points per contest this season, keeping opponents under 14 in 12 of their 14 games.
The Bulldogs produced at least 30 points for the 12th time in their last 13 outings in the victory over Michigan as Stetson Bennett threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns. The senior quarterback improved to 10-1 as a starter this year as he posted his second straight 300-yard performance after failing to reach the mark during the regular season. Bennett has made multiple TD passes eight times this campaign and recorded a total of 10 scoring tosses in his last three games.
Why Alabama can cover
The Crimson Tide are fifth in the nation in total offense with an average of 494.6 yards and are scoring 41.1 points per game to rank fourth. Prior to their 27-6 win over Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl, they recorded 41 or more points in eight of 10 contests and 10 of 13 overall in 2021. Alabama was extremely successful running the ball against the Bearcats, racking up more yards on the ground (301) than Cincinnati’s offense amassed overall in the game (218).
Fifth-year senior Brian Robinson Jr. ran for a career-high 204 yards, setting the school record for a bowl game. He accumulated 134 yards by halftime, which was more than the total amount he gained in 10 of his previous 12 contests in 2021. Robinson is 17th in the nation this season with 1,275 rushing yards after registering 1,361 over his first four campaigns.
