Jazz vs. Pelicans odds, line: 2022 NBA picks, Jan. 3 prediction from proven computer model

The New Orleans Pelicans host the Utah Jazz at 8 p.m. ET on Monday at the Smoothie King Center, where the Pelicans are 7-9 this season. Utah is 26-10 overall and has won eight consecutive road games since getting upset in Orlando on November 7. After missing two games with a lower back strain on December 27 and 29, Jazz star Donovan Mitchell has had one good game and one poor showing in his two starts since. In two previous games against the Pelicans this season, he’s shot just 39.5 percent from the field, but averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds.

Utah is favored by 9.5 points in the latest Pelicans vs. Jazz odds from Caesars Sportsbook, and the over-under is set at 228. Before entering any Jazz vs. Pelicans picks, you’ll want to see the NBA predictions from the model at SportsLine.

What you need to know about the Pelicans

After defeating the Bucks in overtime on December 17, Milwaukee took its revenge against the Pelicans on New Year’s Day with a 136-113 victory at Fiserv Forum. New Orleans shooting guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker finished with 13 points, but it was a struggle to get there, on a 4-for-16 shooting night in his 26 minutes on the floor. Four Pelicans starters each finished with 14 points apiece, but center Jaxson Hayes led all Pelicans players with 23 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

New Orleans’ top scorer, Brandon Ingram, is listed as questionable for tonight’s game with an Achilles injury that has kept him out of the team’s last two games. In his 10 starts prior to getting hurt against Oklahoma City on December 26, he averaged 27.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game. New Orleans has been a top-five rebounding side this season, due in large part to the efforts of Jonas Valanciunas, who averages 12 per game. His role on Monday remains to be seen, but he will be available after missing three of the team’s last four games.

What you need to know about the Jazz

Utah came up short against the Golden State Warriors this past Saturday, falling 123-116. Utah’s defeat came about despite a quality game from center Rudy Gobert, who posted a double-double on 20 points and 19 rebounds. Gobert leads the league in double-doubles this season with 30, and averages 15.7 points and 15 rebounds per game. Mitchell’s 20 points came on just 4-of-19 shots from the field, but he was much better in Utah’s previous game against Minnesota when he scored 39 points after missing two games.

One player that has picked things up as of late for the Jazz has been Jordan Clarkson. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year is coming off of consecutive 20-point games and has averaged 18.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and a steal per game over his last five appearances. He was much better in his second game against New Orleans than his first this season, when he shot 61 percent from the field and scored 20 points off the bench in a November 27 win.
