Why Georgia can cover

Georgia’s defense draws most of the headlines, but the Bulldogs can get it done on offense as well. Stetson Bennett did not record a 300-yard passing performance during the regular season, posting his highest total of 288 in his 2021 debut on Sept. 11 against UAB. The senior quarterback has elevated his production at the right time, though, throwing for 340 yards against Alabama in the SEC title game and 313 versus Michigan in the CFP Semifinal. Bennett had three touchdown passes in each of those contests after registering four against Georgia Tech in the regular-season finale.

Bennett’s top target is Brock Bowers, who leads the Bulldogs with 52 receptions, 846 yards and 12 TD catches. The freshman tight end has had four 100-yard efforts and hauled in two scoring passes on five occasions this season. Bowers has found the end zone in each of his last four outings, making a total of six touchdown catches during the streak.

Why Alabama can cover

The Crimson Tide haven’t been underdogs often of late, but when they’ve found themselves in the situation, they’ve taken it to heart. Alabama has played the role just twice in its last 95 games — both times against Georgia — and answered with dominant victories. It routed the Bulldogs 38-10 as a one-point underdog in 2015 and cruised to a 41-24 triumph in last month’s SEC championship game, which Georgia entered as a six-point favorite.

Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young was superb in that contest, throwing for 421 yards and three touchdowns while adding 40 yards and a TD on the ground. The sophomore quarterback is second in the nation with 46 scoring passes and has made at least three in four of his last five outings. Junior wideout Jameson Williams was Young’s favorite target in the conference title win over Georgia, hauling in seven passes for 184 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
