College basketball rankings: Wisconsin survives scare vs. Maryland to remain in top 10 of Top 25 And 1

Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis took 19 shots, missed 11 of them and finished below his average with 19 inefficient points Sunday at Maryland. It was not his best game. But he and the Badgers — after completely blowing a 21-point lead — still managed to escape the Xfinity Center with a 70-69 victory that extended their winning streak to five games.

The third-year forward scored 12 points in the second half and finished with a career-high 21 on 8-of-12 shooting. He added five rebounds and two steals.

“He was obviously the best player on the floor tonight,” Davis told reporters afterward.

The victory improved Wisconsin to 8-2 in the first two quadrants with zero additional losses. Nobody else in the country has as many wins in the first two quadrants as the Badgers, which is among the reasons I’m super-high on them. Greg Gard’s team remains No. 7 in Monday morning’s updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings. Wisconsin is one of five Big Ten schools in the Top 25 And 1.

Next up for the Badgers is Thursday’s home game against Ohio State, which improved to 10-3 Sunday with a 95-87 win over Northwestern to remain 17th in the Top 25 And 1. Both Wisconsin and Ohio State will enter Thursday’s showdown with 4-1 league records. The only schools that still haven’t lost in the Big Ten are Michigan State and Illinois, two teams that are No. 5 and No. 24 in the Top 25 And 1 two days into the 10th week of this season.
