Although he retired from full-time racing at the end of the 2019 season, David Ragan has remained involved in NASCAR through a pair of one-off appearances in the Daytona 500 the last two years. Once again this year, Ragan will return for another shot at The Great American Race while also driving in several other races alongside it.

On Wednesday, Rick Ware Racing announced that David Ragan will drive the team’s No. 15 Ford in multiple races during the 2022 Cup Series season, starting with the Daytona 500. Ragan, 36, raced full-time in the Cup Series from 2007 to 2019 and scored two career wins, both of which came on superspeedways at Daytona and Talladega.

“I am thrilled to be back in the Daytona 500 driving the new 2022 Ford Mustang for RWR,” Ragan said in a statement released by the team. “I have always loved racing at Daytona, and know that we will have a shot to lead laps and contend for the win this year. The Daytona 500 is a special race with the best drivers in the world, and I can’t wait to hit the track.”

Ragan has seen some of his greatest success in NASCAR come at Daytona, as he earned his first career victory in the 2011 Coke Zero 400 while also finishing fourth in the Daytona 500 in 2007 and 2020. Ragan came close to victory in the 2011 Daytona 500, as he was leading on an overtime restart before being penalized for changing lanes before the start/finish line. Beyond Daytona, Ragan also won at Talladega Superspeedway in 2013 and has scored 16 top 5s and 41 top 10s in his Cup career.

Ragan marks the first confirmed driver for Rick Ware Racing, which fielded four cars in 2021 for drivers Cody Ware, Josh Bilicki, Garrett Smithley, James Davison and others. Bilicki has moved to Spire Motorsports for 2022.
