NBA DFS: Christian Wood and top DraftKings, FanDuel daily Fantasy basketball picks for Jan. 14, 2022

Two of the bottom-five overall Fantasy basketball defenses will face off on Friday when the Orlando Magic visit the Charlotte Hornets. While that might create some eye-roll moments from those watching the game, it also presents a prime opportunity for those looking to juice their NBA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel. The Magic have been the worst Fantasy defense against opposing power forwards on both sites, and Charlotte’s Gordon Hayward is coming off of his best offensive performance in more than a month.

Hayward had 30 points and seven assists in a win against Philadelphia on Wednesday. The last time Hayward faced the Magic, he had an abysmal one-point showing. However, Hayward has averaged 19.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, four assists and 1.4 steals in his last five starts. Should Hayward be part of your NBA DFS strategy on Friday, or should you look elsewhere for value? Before finalizing your NBA DFS picks for Friday, be sure to check out the NBA DFS advice, player rankings, stacks and top daily Fantasy basketball picks from SportsLine’s Mike McClure

McClure is a DFS professional with nearly $2 million in career winnings. He’s also a predictive data engineer at SportsLine who uses a powerful prediction model that simulates every minute of every game 10,000 times, taking factors like matchups, statistical trends and injuries into account.

This allows him to find the best NBA DFS values and create optimal lineups that he shares only over at SportsLine. They’re a must-see for any NBA DFS player.

On Thursday, McClure included Nets superstar James Harden as one of his top NBA DFS picks on both DraftKings and FanDuel. The result: Harden stuffed the stat sheet against the Thunder, finishing with 26 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Anybody that included him in their lineups was well on the way to a profitable day.

Now, McClure has turned his attention to the Friday, January 14, NBA DFS slate and locked in his top daily Fantasy basketball picks. You can only see them by heading to SportsLine.

Top NBA DFS picks for Friday, January 14

One of McClure’s top NBA DFS picks for Friday is Rockets center Christian Wood at $7,400 on DraftKings and $7,200 on FanDuel. Since a one-game team suspension on January 3, Wood has come back strong over his last five starts. During that span, he’s averaged 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.4 steals, and his best game in that run was also his most recent, a win against San Antonio on Wednesday.

The Rockets have yet to play the Sacramento Kings this season, who are their opponent on Friday night. However, Sacramento is a bottom-three Fantasy defense against opposing centers, the position that Wood has exclusively played this season. Wood has led Houston in offensive usage rate in three of the last four games, and is poised to do so once again tonight. In Sacramento’s last game against a true center, Cleveland’s Jarrett Allen finished with 18 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks.

Another key in McClure’s optimal NBA DFS strategy includes rostering Charlotte point guard LaMelo Ball ($8,900 on DraftKings and $8,000 on FanDuel). Ball has struggled with his shooting over his last five games, but in his last start on Wednesday against Philadelphia, he had eight assists, seven rebounds and a steal to go with his 13 points. He missed all eight of his 3-point attempts against the 76ers, but faces an Orlando Magic team that has allowed opponents to hit threes at the fourth-highest rate this season.

Like Hayward, Ball’s previous two starts against Orlando produced two very different performances. In just the fifth game of the season, Ball finished with just seven points and six rebounds. When the Hornets played the Magic again on Nov. 24, he was more productive, finishing with 22 points in a 106-99 win. The Hornets are down some shooting with Kelly Oubre (health and safety protocols) unavailable on Friday, which should pave the way for Ball to get off some more looks on offense.
