Daniel Cormier says the time for Jon Jones to become UFC heavyweight champion has come and gone. Cormier, who fought Jones in 2015 and 2017 grudge matches, expects heavyweight like Francis Ngannou and Ciryl Gane to give Jones more than he can handle.
Cormier, a former UFC champion at heavyweight and light-heavyweight, shared his 2022 predictions on ESPN’S “DC & RC” podcast. The retired Olympic freestyle wrestler believes Jones will eventually journey to the land of heavyweight titans, but that is where the road ends.
“I believe that Jon Jones will fight at heavyweight, and he’ll fight for the belt, but he’ll lose to Ciryl Gane or Francis Ngannou,” said Cormier (h/t MMA Fighting). “And I just think that the time away, with the weight difference and those guys being who they are, that’s the problem.
“It’s not that Jones has gotten worse – it’s just that these guys are a different level of heavyweight.”
UFC heavyweight champion Ngannou and interim heavyweight champion Gane will unify their titles at UFC 270, taking place inside the Honda Center in Anaheim on Saturday, Jan. 22. Jones (26-1, 1 NC) vacated the UFC light heavyweight title on August 17, 2020, in preparation for his heavyweight debut. He has not competed in MMA since a controversial decision win over Dominick Reyes in Feb. 2020.

- Deiveson Figueiredo is working diligently with Henry Cejudo, former two-division UFC champion and Olympic gold medalist, in preparation for his trilogy fight against reigning UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno. The rubber match is personal for Figueiredo, who confirmed Cejudo would be in his corner at UFC 270. “Brandon Moreno is dirty — that’s all I have to say about him,” Figueiredo told MMA Fighting. “He’s dirty. He’s a traitor. When I came to Scottsdale, [Ariz. at the Fight Ready gym,] Henry Cejudo told me about his betrayal. He lived with Henry Cejudo here and then became [Joseph] Benavidez’s sparring partner to fight Cejudo, so that was his biggest betrayal… That’s why Cejudo is coming with me [to the fight], to look into his eyes. Cejudo will be in my corner to look at this little punk’s face, and I’ll knock him out. Mark my words.”
- It might be do-or-die for Kelvin Gastelum when he meets rising UFC middleweight contender Nassourdine Imavov. ESPN was first to report a verbal agreement between the parties for UFC 273 on April 9. Gastelum is on a career-worst stretch, losing two consecutive fights and five of his last six. Imavov is trending in the opposite direction, riding a two-fight winning streak and three of four UFC fights.
- The UFC has reportedly parted ways with four fighters. MMA Junkie published the news, citing anonymous sources. The departures have not been confirmed by the promotion. It is unknown if the fighters were released or if their contracts expired. The quartet of fighters dismissed from UFC duties are Michel Prazeres (26-4), Maki Pitolo (13-9), Jared Gooden (18-7) and Matt Sayles (8-4).
