Serie A: Napoli ‘congratulate’ Inter Milan and Atalanta after Sunday’s ‘entertaining’ scoreless draw

Napoli went heavy on the sarcasm on Sunday night after Atalanta BC and Inter Milan drew 0-0 in Serie A which keeps Simeone Inzaghi’s men two points clear at the summit and moves Gian Piero Gasperini’s side to within a point of the Partenopei.

“The club would like to congratulate Atalanta and Inter on an entertaining and fairly contested game of football” read a tweet shortly after the final whistle at Gewiss Stadium ahead of Napoli’s trip to Bologna on Monday which will mean that they have played a provisional game more.

While Luciano Spalletti’s men were left unhappy, Samir Handanovic made several important saves while Danilo D’Ambrosio hit the woodwork late on as the Nerazzurri threatened a flattering win, but it eventually finished goalless.

Atalanta and Napoli remain in the UEFA Champions League places, but Juventus are breathing down their necks having played a game more than any of the other members of the top four with AC Milan also in action on Monday at home to Spezia in one of two early kick-offs.

Elsewhere, AS Roma edged past Cagliari 1-0 with Sergio Oliveira scoring from the penalty spot on his debut after joining on loan from FC Porto to keep Jose Mourinho’s men in the top six and the European qualification spots.

The best entertainment was a six-goal thriller between Sassuolo and Hellas Verona which saw the home side threaten to pull level twice only for an Antonin Barak hat-trick and an assist to secure the points for Igor Tudor’s men and boost his price tag at the same time.

There was also a 1-1 draw between Venezia and Empoli which prevented the Tuscan outfit from moving back into the top half while Nani’s new team remain perched precariously above the relegation zone despite his assist for David Okereke’s equalizer as both substitutes connected.

Fiorentina at home to Genoa CFC is the third and final Monday game and although Viola have two games in hand, they have fallen behind Juve in the race to gatecrash Champions League qualification and six points will still see Vincenzo Italiano’s outfit trail the Bianconeri by three.
