What you need to know about the Wizards
The Wizards were within striking distance but couldn’t close the gap this past Saturday as they fell 115-110 to the Portland Trail Blazers. Small forward Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had a pretty forgettable game, finishing with only eight points on 3-for-11 shooting in his 29 minutes on the court. Spencer Dinwiddie led the Wizards with 27 points, his second-highest total of the season.
Washington went 2-1 straight up but 0-3 against the spread with Bradley Beal (protocols) out for the last three games. Beal is questionable to return on Monday and he leads the Wizards in points (24 per game) and assists (6.4 per game). Overall, Washington has failed to cover in each of its last six games, following a four-game streak in which won ATS each time.
What you need to know about the 76ers
Meanwhile, while not quite a landslide, the matchup between the Sixers and the Miami Heat this past Saturday was still a pretty decisive one as the Sixers wrapped it up with a 109-98 victory on the road. It was another big night for the Sixers’ center Joel Embiid, who posted a double-double on 32 points and 12 boards. Embiid has now scored at least 30 points in nine of his last 10 games.
The Sixers have covered in eight of those 10 games, including the Dec. 26 win over Washington. Even without Ben Simmons, Philadelphia is still strong defensively as it ranks in the top 10 in both steals per game and blocks per game. But the unit will be shorthanded on Monday as Danny Green (hip), Matisse Thybulle (shoulder) and Shake Milton (back) will all be out.
