What to Know
The San Diego Toreros are 0-12 against the #23 Saint Mary’s Gaels since January of 2016, but they’ll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. San Diego and the Gaels will face off in a West Coast battle at 10 p.m. ET at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Saint Mary’s will be strutting in after a victory while San Diego will be stumbling in from a defeat.
There’s no need to mince words: San Diego lost to the Portland Pilots last week, and they lost bad. The score wound up at 92-60. Guard Marcellus Earlington just could not get things rolling his way, playing for 35 minutes but putting up just nine points on 3-for-13 shooting.
Meanwhile, even if it wasn’t a dominant performance, Saint Mary’s beat the Brigham Young Cougars 69-64 on Saturday. Among those leading the charge for the Gaels was guard Tommy Kuhse, who had 25 points.
The Toreros have to know they’ll be fighting an uphill battle given the 12 point spread they are up against. Those playing the odds have seen things go back and forth with San Diego, who are 13-12 against the spread.
San Diego’s loss took them down to 14-13 while Saint Mary’s’ win pulled them up to 22-6. A win for San Diego would reverse both their bad luck and Saint Mary’s’ good luck. We’ll see if San Diego manages to pull off that tough task or if Saint Mary’s keeps their momentum going instead.
