Storylines
Manchester United: Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes have been out due to COVID and missed the 3-2 win over Tottenham. Their status for this match remained up in the air until Monday, when United announced that they were both back in training. It’s unclear if they will play, but being back at training means they are no longer COVID positive, so they would likely be eligible. Potentially not having Fernandes could be quite a blow to the team’s creativity. If he can’t go, we will likely see something similar to last weekend, where Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho all played behind Ronaldo. It worked with three goals, though all came from the Portuguese superstar. His connection with Sancho is improving though, and it will be needed to win this second leg.
Atletico Madrid: The injuries continue to pile up for Los Colchoneros. Daniel Wass remains out with a ligament injury, Matheus Cunha has missed five games with a knee injury, a muscle knock has kept Mario Hermoso out for two games, and Geoffrey Kondgobia’s muscle injury has seen him also miss two matches. And that’s just the beginning. Thomas Lemar (muscle), Angel Correa (foot) and Sime Vrsaljko (muscle) have each missed a match. Hermoso, Kondogbia and Correa have all been named to the squad for the second leg, but Diego Simeone will be without some key players for this match.
Prediction
Los Colchoneros take the lead, concede the equalizer but sneak through in penalty kicks by the smallest of margins. Pick: Manchester United 1, Atletico Madrid 1 (Atletico win on PKs, 4-3)
