One of the top prospects from the state of North Carolina in the 2023 recruiting cycle has decided to stay close to home with four-star tight end Javonte Vereen committing Friday to Dave Doeren and NC State live on CBS Sports HQ. In addition to being a four-star prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite, Vereen ranks as the No. 17 tight end in the country and No. 11 player in the state.

The Havelock, North Carolina, native chose the Wolfpack over Louisville and Maryland, aligning himself with an NC State staff and program that was one of the first to make the 6-foot-4 tight end a priority in their recruiting efforts with a scholarship offer. According to 247Sports, Vereen is just third commit for Dave Doeren’s 2023 class and the highest-rated prospect in the group.

It’s clear why Power Five programs are interested in Vereen’s athleticism because he’s done a little bit of everything in high school. Vereen played basketball and baseball as a sophomore, and in 2021 was a two-way player for the football team with more than 1,000 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns on offense, while adding 45 tackles, four tackles for loss, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles on defense.

247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks writes that Vereen projects as a Power Five starter with some upside to be an “impact player.”

Regularly wins contested situations with high-pointing ability, timing, and dexterity. Strong and competitive in those 50-50 situations as well. Fairly natural plucker who snags throws outside of frame with hands-catching acumen. Above average field athlete. Runs hard and provides a run-after-catch threat. Experienced as an attached tight end and flexed out. Good initial burst and acceleration, especially out of a three-point stance. Knows how to leak to open space and give his QB a window.
