NWSL Challenge Cup picks for North Carolina Courage vs. Kansas City Current
Before you tune in to Wednesday’s match, you need to see the Kansas City Current vs. North Carolina Courage picks from SportsLine’s women’s soccer insider Sandra Herrera. She is CBS Sports’ women’s soccer analyst and has been reporting on the game for more than five years. Providing insight both internationally and domestically, she has covered local markets, NWSL drafts and NWSL championship finals. She knows the women’s game inside and out.
For North Carolina Courage vs. Kansas City Current, Herrera is backing under 2.5 total goals. These teams met twice last season in Kansas and both games followed similar scripts. In each, the Current led in possession and generated both more total shots and more shots on goal. But in the end, neither team was able to find the back of the net as those two games produced two scoreless draws.
This season, Kansas City’s offense appears to be the weaker unit and the club has been shut out twice in its last four games. But the Current will be hard to score on as long as Adrianna Franch is manning the net. A two-time winner of the NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year award, Franch is a fixture on the United States Women’s National Team and was in net when the USWNT won the bronze medal match in last year’s Olympics.
Meanwhile, the Courage have one of the NWSL’s best defenses, as the 23 goals they allowed last season were the third-fewest in the league. Goals could be harder to come by, though, as each team’s top scorer from last year has since departed. As a result, Herrera is expecting a game dominated by defense which is why she confidently backs the under.
