NBA DFS: May 17, 2022 Optimal Celtics vs. Heat DraftKings, FanDuel daily Fantasy basketball picks

Veteran Al Horford had a solid but unspectacular season in his return to the Boston Celtics. But the soon-to-be 36-year-old has increased his production across the board in the 2022 NBA playoffs, which is a big reason why Boston is in the Eastern Conference Finals. Horford is definitely on the NBA DFS radar for tonight’s Game 1 versus the Heat, as Miami was one of four teams he averaged a double-double against in the regular season.

Horford also already has three games with 20-plus points this postseason after having just three such games in the regular season. With Miami’s defense focusing on Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, Horford could exploit the Heat and produce in a way that far exceeds his NBA DFS price tags. Before you make your NBA DFS picks for Heat vs. Celtics in Game 1, be sure to check out the NBA DFS advice, player rankings, stacks and top daily Fantasy basketball picks from SportsLine’s Mike McClure.

McClure is a DFS professional with nearly $2 million in career winnings. He’s also a predictive data engineer at SportsLine who uses a powerful prediction model that simulates every minute of every game 10,000 times, taking factors like matchups, statistical trends and injuries into account.

This allows him to find the best NBA DFS values and create optimal lineups that he shares only over at SportsLine. They’re a must-see for any NBA DFS player.

On Sunday, McClure listed Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo as one of his top NBA DFS picks on both DraftKings and FanDuel. The result: despite the loss, Antetokounmpo finished with 25 points, 20 rebounds, nine assists and two steals to return 69 points on DraftKings and 66.5 points on FanDuel. Anybody that included him in their lineups was well on the way to a profitable day.

Now, McClure has turned his attention to the Celtics vs. Heat Game 1 NBA DFS slate and locked in his top daily Fantasy basketball picks. You can only see them by heading to SportsLine.

Top NBA DFS picks for Tuesday, May 17

For Tuesday, one of McClure’s NBA DFS selections is Heat forward Jimmy Butler. The swingman has made it a habit to elevate his game for the postseason and this year is no different. Butler is averaging 28.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and a league-leading 2.1 steals across 10 playoff games.

Butler has scored at least 20 points in all but one playoff game and he also dropped 20-plus points in both regular-season contests versus the Celtics. As the primary scorer and playmaker for Miami, Butler could have a similar series versus Boston as Antetokounmpo had in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The two-time MVP averaged 33.9 points and 7.1 assists across those seven games, and Butler will be the offensive focal point for Miami in the conference finals. Butler has had either a double-double or 30-plus points in seven of his 10 postseason games so he’s a must-start for Tuesday.

Another part of McClure’s optimal NBA DFS strategy includes stacking Butler with guard Victor Oladipo. After rupturing his quadriceps tendon for the second time late in the 2020-21 season, Oladipo didn’t return to the court until April 2022. He played just eight regular-season games but has already played in eight postseason games and has become an invaluable part of Miami’s bench with Kyle Lowry injured.

Lowry (hamstring) is out for Game 1 and Oladipo has averaged 11.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists this postseason when Lowry has not played. He didn’t face Boston this year, but going back over the last few years — and with a few different teams — Oladipo has scored at least 24 points in his last three games against the Celtics. That may be the high end of what one should expect from Oladipo tonight, but he will be a cost-effective option on a one-game NBA DFS slate.
