After giving up just one run and striking out 24 over 13 innings of work in his last two starts, White Sox starter Dylan Cease will return to the mound on Saturday against the Giants in San Francisco. Cease led qualified American League starters in strikeouts per nine innings last year (12.3) and he’s doing so again this year (13.4), but this will be his first time pitching against the Giants. San Francisco was shut out by Lance Lynn and company on Friday, and the Giants rank 12th in the National League in batting average entering Saturday, making Cease a compelling option for MLB DFS lineups.
However, he comes at a steep price, with FanDuel charging $10,700 and DraftKings pricing him at $9,500 as the weather forecast is calling for winds blowing out to left field in excess of 20 mph. The Giants are fifth in the NL in home runs this season (91), so might there be safer starting pitching options available in the MLB DFS player pool? Before making any MLB DFS picks for Saturday, be sure to check out the MLB DFS advice, strategy and projections from SportsLine daily Fantasy expert Mike McClure.

On Friday, McClure highlighted Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas as one of his top MLB DFS picks on DraftKings and FanDuel. The result: Thomas went 2-for-5 with a home run, a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs to return 28 points on DraftKings and 37.9 points on FanDuel. Anybody that included him in their lineups was well on the way to a profitable day.

McClure’s top MLB DFS picks for Saturday, July 2, 2022
One of McClure’s top MLB DFS picks for Saturday is Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos, who is listed at $3,700 on DraftKings and $2,800 on FanDuel. Despite establishing himself as a well-above-average right-handed hitter during his time in Detroit, Castellanos made his first All-Star appearance last season after slashing .309/.362/.576 with 34 home runs and 100 RBIs for the Reds.
That earned him a five-year, $100 million contract with the Phillies, and while things haven’t gone as planned thus far (.680 OPS), Castellanos has a proven track record that leaves open the possibility for more productivity down the stretch. He hit his first home run since May 30 on Thursday and he’ll have a matchup with lefty Matthew Liberatore on Saturday. Castellanos has a career .882 OPS against left-handed pitching.
Another part of McClure’s optimal MLB DFS strategy includes rostering Braves first baseman Matt Olson ($4,300 on DraftKings and $3,700 on FanDuel). Though Freddie Freeman hadn’t yet signed with the Dodgers when the trade was made, Olson was acquired from the Athletics because the Braves believed that Freeman was already out the door. And the 2021 AL All-Star has ensured that Atlanta is still getting plenty of pop from the position.
Olson leads the National League with 31 doubles and he has also hit 12 home runs with 42 RBIs while slashing .252/.346/.477 for the season. Olson’s OPS rises to .861 against right-handed pitching and on Saturday he’ll take on Reds starter Tyler Mahle, who is a righty with a 4.53 ERA on the season.
