2022 Open Championship Fantasy golf rankings, picks: Back Justin Thomas, avoid Jordan Spieth at St. Andrews

Collin Morikawa will try to rebound from another off-week as he prepares to defend his title starting Thursday at the 2022 Open Championship on the Old Course at St. Andrews. Morikawa missed the cut at last week’s Scottish Open, though he also played poorly before fifth-place finishes at this year’s Masters and U.S. Open. He will face a pair of new major champions in Scottie Scheffler (Masters) and Matthew Fitzpatrick (U.S. Open), as well as two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas. Where should every player be in your 2022 Open Championship fantasy golf rankings, and which 2022 Open Championship fantasy golf sleepers should you target?

Rory McIlroy is the 9-1 favorite in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2022 Open Championship odds, with Morikawa at 25-1. Xander Schauffele, who has won consecutive tournaments, is the co-second favorite along with Rahm at 14-1. Can Schauffele make it three in a row and keep you in the running to win with your 2022 Open Championship fantasy golf picks? Before you lock in any 2022 Open Championship Fantasy golf rankings or make any bets, be sure you check out the Fantasy golf projections from SportsLine fantasy expert Riley Gates.

Gates is a writer for 247Sports and has covered a range of sports for nearly five years. He has followed golf closely for much longer and has a profound knowledge of the sport. He also knows what it takes to win, on the course and in fantasy sports.

Gates has been crushing his golf picks all season. At the John Deere Classic, he nailed 40-1 longshot J.T. Poston as a potential winner. “Poston has been sniffing a win in recent months,” Gates said. “At these odds, I think it is more than fair to give Poston a light sprinkle to come away with the win.”

The 29-year-old went 21 under at TPC Deere Run to cruise to a three-stroke victory, his second on the PGA Tour and his first in nearly three years. Gates’ top three fantasy anchors also all finished in the top 16, two of them in the top 10.

At the Travelers, he was all over Sahith Theegala, who was priced at just $7,300 at DraftKings and finished as a runner-up to help many Fantasy golf players cash in. At the Memorial, five of Gates’ nine picks finished in the top 15, including his biggest sleeper, Brendan Steele — just $6,600 at DraftKings — who posted a top-10 finish.

And at the Wells Fargo, four of his top six players finished in the top five, including winner Max Homa, a 40-1 long shot. Anyone who has followed Gates is way up.

Now, Gates has ranked his top golfers for the Open Championship 2022. You can only see his Fantasy golf rankings and Open Championship picks at SportsLine.

2022 Open Championship Fantasy golf picks

Gates knows Justin Thomas has been at the top of his game most of the year and is backing the two-time PGA champion to win another major at the 2022 British Open. The missed cut at the Scottish Open could have just come from looking ahead, and he will have worked hard over the weekend to correct any flaws. The 29-year-old leads the tour in birdie average at 4.7 per round, and he has finished in the top five in three of his past six tournaments, including his PGA win. He is third in strokes gained total, and if he finds trouble, he is seventh in sand saves, converting par at 64 percent.

On the other hand, the expert is aware of Jordan Spieth’s success in the British Open, but he isn’t expecting him to make a run this time. Gates is fading the 2017 Open champion because of his troubles in the biggest events this year. “He doesn’t have it this year, especially in the majors,” the expert told SportsLine. The 28-year-old missed the cut at the Masters, tied for 34th at the PGA and was 37th in the U.S. Open. His driving and putting have both been poor all season. Spieth ranks 142nd in driving accuracy (57.4 percent) and 144th in strokes gained putting (-.133).  See his full 2022 British Open Fantasy golf rankings here.
