History will be on the line at the 2022 MLB Home Run Derby when New York slugger Pete Alonso goes for his third straight title. The event wasn’t held in 2020 due to the pandemic, but Alonso won in 2021 and 2019. Ken Griffey Jr. is the only player to ever win the Home Run Derby three times, though he didn’t pull it off three times in a row. Alonso is the +190 favorite (risk $100 to win $190) in the latest 2022 Home Run Derby odds from Caesars Sportsbook. The MLB Home Run Derby 2022 is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
He’ll face Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. (+750) in the first round. Other Home Run Derby 2022 favorites include Kyle Schwarber (+330), Juan Soto (+600) and Julio Rodriguez (+700). Corey Seager, Jose Ramirez and Albert Pujols are all considered long shots at +1000 or higher. 2022 Home Run Derby expert preview
One surprise: Roberts isn’t backing Alonso as he looks for the three-peat. Alonso has 24 home runs on the season, but only two since June 26. His numbers are still strong overall, though he’s pacing behind the 53 home runs and the .583 slugging percentage he had when he first won this contest in 2019.
Roberts is also concerned about the first-round matchup for Alonso. He takes on Acuna Jr., who Roberts thinks is particularly dangerous early in the contest. Acuna’s “exhausting” swings might limit his chances to go all the way, but Roberts thinks he has the raw power to at least give Alonso a fight early, so he’s staying away from the Mets slugger at the premium price.
How to make 2022 Home Run Derby picks
Instead, Roberts is backing a hitter who enters this contest with a lot of momentum. “It’s his turn and the price is nice,” Roberts said. You can only get that selection at SportsLine.
