Baseball begins its second half on Thursday following the 2022 MLB All-Star Game, and four of the six games on the schedule are part of doubleheaders. The New York Yankees and Houston Astros are one of those doubleheader tandems, but daily Fantasy baseball players should consider the pitching matchups in each before choosing between their early or late game for tournaments on DraftKings or FanDuel. Heading into Thursday, the Yankees hadn’t committed to a starting pitcher for their late game, but how will the Astros starters affect your picks for MLB DFS lineups?
Houston’s Cristian Javier will pitch in the first matchup, and he struck out 13 Yankees in seven scoreless innings against New York on June 25. Yankees hitters in the MLB DFS player pool may be more attractive in their later game against Luis Garcia, who only allowed three hits and a run against them on June 30, but pitched just 5.1 innings in a Houston win. Before you make your MLB DFS picks for Thursday, be sure to check out the MLB DFS advice, strategy and projections from SportsLine daily Fantasy expert Mike McClure.
McClure is a daily Fantasy pro who has won over $2 million in his career. And when it comes to daily Fantasy baseball, McClure is at his best. Recognized in the book “Fantasy Football (and Baseball) for Smart People: How to Turn Your Hobby into a Fortune” as a top MLB DFS player, McClure’s proprietary projection model simulates each game 10,000 times, taking factors such as matchups and recent results into account. This allows him to find the best values on every site.
On Sunday, McClure highlighted Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole as one of his top MLB DFS picks on DraftKings and FanDuel. The result: Cole pitched seven innings and struck out 12 Red Sox batters while only allowing two runs to return 37.35 points on DraftKings and 61 points on FanDuel. Anybody that included him in their lineups was well on the way to a profitable day.

McClure’s top MLB DFS picks for Thursday, July 21, 2022
For Thursday, one of McClure’s MLB DFS picks is Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, who is listed at $5,800 on DraftKings and $4,500 on FanDuel. Judge struck out in both of his at bats in Tuesday’s All-Star Game, but that doesn’t take away from the incredible season that he’s had so far in 2022. He leads Major League Baseball in home runs, with 33, and total bases, with 209.
Judge has only played one game at Minute Maid Park this season, and it didn’t go well, with an 0-for-4 result at the plate. But for the season, he has been an effective hitter on the road. Eight of his 14 doubles this season have come in away games, and he has a road OPS of .931. In his last five games heading into the All-Star Break, Judge had six hits with three home runs, five RBI and a stolen base.
Another part of McClure’s optimal MLB DFS strategy includes stacking Judge with OF/DH Giancarlo Stanton ($4,600 on DraftKings and $3,800 on FanDuel). Stanton has already had a huge week after his fourth inning two-run homer was the catalyst for him to take MVP honors at the 2022 MLB All-Star Game. This season, Stanton is tied with two others for the fifth-most home runs in the majors (24), and tied with Atlanta’s Austin Riley for the ninth-most RBI, at 61.
Stanton had a much better showing in his previous game at Houston earlier this season, when he went 2-for-4 from from the plate. Both Javier and Garcia are right-handed pitchers, and Stanton’s best offensive splits this year have come against righty starters. Three-quarters of his home runs this season have come in those matchups, as well as 72 percent of his total RBI.
