Colorado football recruiting: Transfer portal news, 2024 roster, recruits, plus top Deion Sanders targets

Deion Sanders’ first season in Boulder, started off on a high, as the team won its first three games and spent three weeks in the AP Top 25 Poll. However, Colorado Buffaloes football then went into a tailspin, losing eight of its last nine to finish the year 4-8. Coach Prime has elite talent at his disposal with his son, QB Shedeur Sanders, as well as WR/CB Travis Hunter, but Deion Sanders knows he needs to fortify the rest of the 2024 Colorado football roster with the program moving back to the Big 12, after 13 years in the Pac-12.

Unfortunately for the Buffs, there’s been a mass exodus of players out of Boulder, including the lone 5-star from the Class of 2023, CB Cormani McClain. The Buffaloes were active in the 2024 college football transfer portal, as 247Sports has them ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 in terms of their transfer class, but the team lags in recruiting, ranking 15th out of 16 Big 12 programs in that regard. If you love Coach Prime and the Buffs, or just want the latest roster updates and college football transfer portal news, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at, the 247Sports affiliate that covers the Colorado Buffaloes.

Colorado football roster departures

One of the more notable departures from the Colorado football roster is cornerback Cormani McClain. The former five-star recruit played in nine games for the Buffaloes last season, starting in four. He recorded 13 total tackles including six unassisted, one tackle for loss and two pass breakups.

He has a rare blend of size, length and speed, but he wasn’t the immediate star most assumed he would be coming out of high school. McClain’s departure leaves depth concerns in Colorado’s secondary. That’s a big reason why the Buffaloes have signed corners like RJ Johnson (Arkansas) and DJ McKinney (Oklahoma State) this offseason. Colorado football news, roster

While Colorado was middle-of-the-pack in scoring offense last season, it ranked in the bottom 10 of all of FBS in scoring defense. So, upgrading that side of the ball was a priority, and the team did that by landing four-star recruits Kamron Mikell and Brandon Davis-Swain. Mikell could be the second coming of Hunter as a two-way player who was the No. 2 athlete in the 247Sports rankings. He’s played quarterback, running back, receiver and cornerback, but is viewed as a defensive back at the college level.

Meanwhile, Davis-Swain is a versatile defensive lineman who has experience both rushing from the interior and from a two-point stance on the edge. He’s one of several new D-line additions to the 2024 Colorado football roster, as the team also landed Quency Wiggins and Samuel Okunlola from the college football transfer portal. Wiggins, formerly of LSU, was the No. 1 prospect in Louisiana coming out of high school, while Okunlola registered a team-high 5.0 sacks at Pitt last season. Both players were ranked among the top six defensive linemen available in the transfer portal. Join to get the latest on all of Colorado’s football roster additions
