Texas A&M baseball coaching search 2024: Candidates, hot board, names to watch by Aggies insiders

A day after Jim Schlossnagle told a reporter that he originally took the Texas A&M job to “never take another job again,” the now-former Aggies head baseball coach bolted to rival Texas. It was a crushing blow for a Texas A&M program that just completed its deepest college baseball run ever, losing in the College World Series Finals to Tennessee. This provides an immediate test for Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts, who came to College Station in March.

Players have to put their names in the transfer portal by July 2, so Alberts is motivated to find a new Texas A&M baseball coach within a week. If you love the Aggies, or just want to know who will be calling the shots for Texas A&M in 2025, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at GigEm247, the 247Sports affiliate that covers Texas A&M.

Top Texas A&M baseball coach candidates

One name the staff has identified as a potential target is Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor. The 53-year-old has been at Virginia since 2004, taking the Cavaliers to seven College World Series appearances. He won the 2015 College World Series and is a five-time ACC Coach of the Year, so he has the accolades that a school like Texas A&M is looking for.

Virginia director of athletics Carla Williams recently announced that O’Connor had agreed to a contract extension through the 2031 season, but Texas A&M has the money to buy him out. The Cavaliers made a College World Series appearance again this year, giving them the second-most in the country since 2009. O’Connor is a proven coach to keep an eye on, although his contract situation adds a complicated layer compared to some of the other names on the hot board. See more candidates at GigEm247.
