Alabama added a major defensive developmental piece to its 2022 recruiting class as three-star defensive lineman Isaiah Hastings committed to the Crimson Tide on CBS Sports HQ on Tuesday. Hastings, a senior at Clearwater Academy International in Clearwater, Florida, committed to Alabama over Florida, Michigan, Oregon and Georgia.

Hastings has incredible upside as the 6-foot-4, 290-pound bruiser is still learning football after growing up in Canada. The high school senior ranks as the No. 421 player in the recruiting class and No. 63 defensive lineman. Through seven games, Hastings has accumulated 6.5 sacks and 24 quarterbacks at Clearwater Academy International.

While Hastings is the lowest-ranked commitment in the class as a rare long-term project for the Crimson Tide, his addition launches Alabama past Georgia for the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class. Sixteen of the Crimson Tide’s 19 commitments in the Class of 2022 are blue-chip recruits.

247Sports Southeast Recruiting Analyst Andrew Ivins compares Hastings to former Bama standout Christian Barmore with this scouting report:

“Uses wide base to wedge himself through gaps and overpower opposing offensive linemen. Wins more times than not with a simple bull rush, but has also developed a few different pass-rushing moves and is pretty versed in hand-to-hand combat. Not the type of player to give up on many plays and finds ways to make stops outside the hashes … Will need to keep progressing and spend some time in a college weight room, but should eventually work his way into the rotation at a College Football Playoff contender given his size and ability to get after the quarterback. Could be used in a variety of different alignments depending on what is needed at the college of his choice, but will be at his best when he’s simply creating push up the middle.”
