Serie A: Weston McKennie scores, but Sassuolo pull off historic win over Juventus; Inter, Roma, Atalanta win

This week’s first slate of games is almost done with just Napoli against Bologna left on Thursday and like Tuesday, Wednesday produced some significant results.

Juventus lost again while Inter Milan, Roma, Lazio, and Atalanta all won to further define the top end of Serie A which already has 10 points between leaders AC Milan and La Dea just outside of the UEFA Champions League places. You can catch every Serie A match on Paramount+

We recap Wednesday’s results.

Juventus 1, Sassuolo 2

Massimiliano Allegri’s men tasted defeat after a 10-match unbeaten run as they went down to Sassuolo to halt the Bianconeri’s recent rise.

Davide Frattesi’s first half opener was teed up by Gregoire Defrel and then cancelled out by Weston McKennie’s leveller from a Paulo Dybala assist.

However, instead of Juve going on to win it, Domenico Berardi provided for Maxime Lopez to score at the death in the fifth minute of added time to gift the visitors all three points and their first-ever win at Allianz Stadium.

The Old Lady are now 13 points behind leaders Milan with their title hopes looking slim.

Empoli 0, Inter Milan 2

It was more straightforward evening for Inter who disposed of Empoli through Danilo D’Ambrosio and Federico Dimarco efforts in either half at Stadio Carlo Castellani.

The result keeps Inter third and now there is a two-point gap over Roma and six points between the Nerazzurri and Juve who are currently out of European contention.

Cagliari 1, Roma 2

The Sardinians threatened to make life difficult for Jose Mourinho and his side but ultimately Walter Mazzarri’s hosts fell short again and remain bottom.

Cagliari took the lead through Leonardo Pavoletti but 20 minutes from time, Lorenzo Pellegrini came to the fore for the Giallorossi.

Inside of seven minutes, Pellegrini had teed up Ibanez to level and then put Roma ahead himself to ensure that they remain within two points of Inter in second.

Lazio 1, Fiorentina 0

Maurizio Sarri’s men edged Viola at Stadio Olimpico with Pedro getting the only goal of the game seven minutes into the second half.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic provided the assist as Lazio moved up ahead of Juve and into the continental spots.

Sampdoria 1, Atalanta 3

The most entertaining game was arguably one of the earlier kick-offs with Gian Piero Gasperini’s men recovering from a goal down to win 3-1.

Francesco Caputo gave Blucerchiati the lead only for a Kristoffer Askildsen own goal to level for La Dea before Duvan Zapata converted from Davide Zappacosta four minutes later.

Josip Ilicic made the game safe late on and Atalanta remain within three points of third spot in the table.

Udinese 1, Verona 1

Finally, Udinese and Verona shared a point apiece with early and late goals at Dacia Arena as Isaac Success gave the hosts the lead only for former Friulani Antonin Barak to level from the penalty spot inside the final 10 minutes.
