Training racing pigeons is not a simple task. Pigeon fanciers prefer to train from a very younger age. A systematic day-by-day training will give you positive results. There are many factors to consider while training pigeons especially on food and supplements. The first and foremost factor is to have food and water ready for the returning pigeons. You can find the best and potential racing pigeons at a very young age mainly with 24-30 days of age.
The potential methods to train racing pigeons could vary depending on the race type and distance. The methods also vary depending on the food fed. The best method to train is from a younger age before start to fly free. Start the training by placing them in a fly pen (wired area) and place food in the loft. This will ensure make them to return to the loft for food and water. This can be followed for the first two to three weeks. Now, you can open the fly pen and let the pigeons fly free. Let them fly free and do not be alarmed. In this stage, the pigeons will start to fly, flock and return to the loft for food and water.
You can start training pigeons by taking them out for two, five or ten miles. Continue the same for next couple of days until you make sure the pigeons come out to the loft themselves. When you ensure they return to the loft couple of times, increase the distance gradually up to 30, 40 or 50 miles. This is the simplest method to train the pigeons. Take the pigeons out on daily basis or thrice a week regularly. It is important to take the pigeons to all different directions while training, to ensure they can find their way home to the loft.
Do not take out the racing pigeons to train during rainy, heavy wind and fog. These climatic conditions are not suitable to train racing pigeons as it can affect their health. It is wise to start the training the younger ones by taking them out for 2 miles in the beginning and gradually increasing it to 5, 10, 12, 15 and 20 finally. By then, they would have developed good speed and better returning features.
An important features and benefits in training racing pigeons together is that, you will be able to give them vaccination and can be weaned at the same age. The best time to train them is before 9 AM. Try to vary the training schedules and distances. You should have separate training schedules for birds that fly 20 miles in 2 hours and others that cannot fly better than that. Make sure you feed the birds regularly unlimited until mid afternoon before it’s pulled.
Training racing pigeons is very interesting, especially if you love your pigeons. With proper training and care, pigeons will be able to fly more than 90 miles in an hour with an average speed of 60+ in an hour. Apart from the training, good supplement should be fed in time.
