Why the 49ers can cover

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is questionable and was limited at practice with a calf injury, but indications are he will be ready by Sunday Night Football. He missed the team’s Oct. 3 game against Arizona. Garoppolo has an 85 or better rating in three of his four starts this season. He will be looking for his fifth game in a row in 2021 with a touchdown pass, and is also looking for his third game in a row against an AFC South opponent with a 100 or better rating. For the season, he has completed 78-of-118 passes (66.1 percent) for 925 yards and five touchdowns. He has been intercepted twice, but has a rating of 96.9.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel is the 49ers’ top receiver with 31 catches for 548 yards (17.7 average) and three touchdowns. He has eight explosive plays of 20 or more yards and has converted 20 first downs. Samuel had 71 yards from scrimmage, including his fourth career rushing touchdown in Week 5 against Arizona. He has five or more catches in four of five games this season.

Why the Colts can cover

Despite that, San Francisco is not a lock to cover the Colts vs. 49ers spread. That’s because Indianapolis has played well of late, including Sunday’s 31-3 victory over the Houston Texans. Quarterback Carson Wentz led the charge, passing for 223 yards and two touchdowns for a 127.7 rating last week. He has six touchdowns and no interceptions for a 123.4 rating over the past three games, the highest rating in the NFL since Week 4. He has four touchdowns, including three passing and one rushing, against two interceptions in two career starts against the 49ers, both wins.

Running back Jonathan Taylor continues to tear up opposing defenses. He had 158 yards from scrimmage, including a season-high 145 yards rushing, and two touchdowns last week, his fourth-career game with 150 yards from scrimmage. That is tied for the third-most among running backs since 2020. Taylor also will be looking for his fourth game in a row with 100 or more yards from scrimmage and a rushing touchdown. He ranks second in the league with 682 yards from scrimmage in 2021, including 472 yards rushing.
