Tom Brady’s father: ‘Damn right’ Tom Brady is vindicated by winning Super Bowl without Bill Belichick, Pats

The New England Patriots were all that Tom Brady had ever known prior to leaving the franchise to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. In the wake of Brady’s split with the Pats, his father, Tom Brady Sr., believes that his son’s post-Patriots success has validated his decision to leave the team.

“Damn right,” Brady Sr. told Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston. “Damn right. [Bill] Belichick wanted him out the door, and last year he threw 56 touchdowns. I think that’s a pretty good year.”

Since leaving the Patriots, Brady has won a Super Bowl in his first season with the Buccaneers and defeated one of the sport’s top stars, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, in the process. During the 2020 season, Brady threw 40 touchdowns in the regular season while adding 10 more during Tampa Bay’s playoff run.

Meanwhile, the Pats went 7-9 last season without Brady and did not make the playoffs.

Here’s more of what Brady Sr. had to say about the situation, via NBC Sports Boston:

“My feeling is that Tommy is extraordinarily appreciative of everything that happened during his New England career, and he’s more than happy that he’s moved on, because it was pretty obvious that the Patriot regime felt that it was time for him to move on. And frankly, it may well have been the perfect [time] for Belichick to move on from him. On the other hand, I think the Tampa Bay Bucs are pretty happy that the decision was made in Foxboro that they didn’t want to afford him or didn’t want to keep him when his last contract came up.”

After facing off against the Los Angeles Rams this coming weekend, Brady and the Buccaneers will travel to Foxboro to take on the Patriots in Week 4. It will mark the first time that Brady will face his former team since signing with the Buccaneers.

Through the first two weeks of the 2021 season, Brady continues to play at an exceptionally high level. The 44-year old signal caller is completing 65.1 percent of his passes and has thrown for 655 yards and nine touchdowns in those two games. Brady is coming off a five-touchdown performance in a 48-25 win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2.
