UFC Vegas 38 video: Aspen Ladd misses weight after lengthy struggle on scale

Aspen Ladd’s weigh-in struggles are well-documented, and she had another rough one on Friday.

In her first weigh-in since December 2019, Ladd missed weight by one pound for her bantamweight bout against Macy Chiasson scheduled for Saturday’s UFC Vegas 38 card at UFC APEX. However, Ladd only managed to hit 137 pounds after initially tipping the scales at 141.5 pounds, 5.5 pounds over the bantamweight limit.

Ladd was the last fighter to appear at Friday morning’s official weigh-ins and she was initially fully clothed, which explains the significant difference between her first and second attempts. Her team immediately called for the box to be brought in so that she could remove her clothes and weigh in again, which led to a lengthy procedure where it appeared that Ladd could not balance herself on the scale.

According to the official reading, Ladd weighed 137 pounds. It is not yet known if her bout with Chiasson (who successfully weighed in at 136 pounds) will proceed at a catchweight and if so, what percentage of Ladd’s purse will be forfeited as penalty.

This is not the first time that Ladd has had issues with the scale. Ahead of a July 2019 encounter with Germaine de Randamie, Ladd was visibly shaking as she weighed in and she later spoke of her difficulties in an interview with MMA Fighting.

Ladd also missed weight by 1.8 pounds for an April 21, 2018 fight with Leslie Smith. That bout was cancelled after Smith declined to take a catchweight bout.
