Why Washington can cover

The Huskies have done a good job limiting opposing offenses and boast a solid linebacking corps. Sophomores Edefuan Ulofoshio and Jackson Sirmon are at the heart of that unit. Ulofoshio leads the team in tackles with 51, including 25 solo, and has one pass breakup. He was a Pro Football Focus preseason first-team All-American in 2021 and was second-team All-Pac-12 in 2020, starting all four games. He made a team-high 47 tackles.

Sirmon is second on the team with 43 tackles, including 26 solo, and one forced fumble. He has played in all six games this season and made a career-high 12 tackles, including seven solo, at Michigan on Sept. 11. He started all four games in 2020, and made three tackles and 1 ½ tackles for loss against Arizona. Simon was named to the 2019 and 2020 Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll.

Why Arizona can cover

Although the Wildcats have yet to crack the win column, they’re showing some signs of improvement. Defensively, they have held their opponents to under 400 yards of total offense four times this season after having done that once through the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Arizona is also fifth in the Pac-12 in total defense, allowing 372 yards per game. The Wildcats haven’t finished higher than eighth in the conference since 2010, which is also the last time they allowed fewer than 400 yards per game for the year.

With sophomore running back Drake Anderson questionable for the game due to injury, sophomore Michael Wiley and freshman Jalen John may get a bigger workload. Wiley is second on the team in rushing, carrying 58 times for 185 yards (3.2 average). In three games, John has carried 18 times for 111 yards (6.2 average). John carried 11 times for 71 yards (6.5 average) in the 34-0 loss at Colorado last week.
