Hurricane Ida causes extreme flooding at Yankee Stadium, forces delays at US Open

Hurricane Ida has made its way through the eastern part of the United States, and on Wednesday night the tri-state area was in its crosshairs. Remnants from the hurricane caused heavy rain that led to damage and flooding across the region — and it affected stadiums and arenas in both New York and New Jersey.

New York’s Central Park was hit with 3.15 inches of rain between 8:51 p.m. and 9:51 p.m. — the most ever for an hour in the city, according to CBS News.

Here is what Yankee Stadium, in the Bronx, looked like at around 10 p.m.:

YES Network broadcaster Michael Kay tweeted out the photos. The Yankees played the Angels in California last night, but Kay and the rest of the channel’s team called the game from Yankee Stadium.

The remnants of the hurricane also hit Queens. The area around Flushing Meadows, where the US Open is taking place, was hit hard. The tournament grounds saw some flooding and a match was even forced to be pushed back by a few hours due to the weather.

And a reminder — Billie Jean King National Tennis Center has a retractable roof to withstand rain. However, the roof was no match for the heavy winds and rain on Wednesday:

Despite being under a roof, fans were needing umbrellas during the match between Diego Schwartzman and Kevin Anderson. The two began their match before 7:30 p.m. and were not finished until past 1 a.m. at Arthur Ashe Stadium thanks to the severe weather. The match originally began at Louis Armstrong Stadium and was moved to Ashe once the match taking place there concluded.

Schwartzman just wanted to get the match finished on Wednesday, telling the Associated Press, “I was ready to play and I wanted to finish today, not finish tomorrow. You never know what can happen. I was trying to push … to play tonight.”

Schwartzman defeated Anderson 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-4.

New Jersey was also affected by the storm. Here is what TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater looked like on Thursday morning:

The park is home to the Somerset Patriots, who are Double-A affiliate of Yankees.
