The San Francisco 49ers are just two weeks into the 2021 regular season, but their backfield is already littered with injuries. Raheem Mostert is out for the season due to a knee injury he suffered in Week 1 and their three remaining top backs all suffered injuries in Week 2. Elijah Mitchell (shoulder), JaMycal Hasty (ankle) and rookie Trey Sermon (concussion) all were knocked out of their win over the Eagles. With those injuries looming over the Niners, the club is bringing in some reinforcements.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the 49ers have signed running back Jacques Patrick off the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad. The 24-year-old is a big back, standing at 6-foot-2, 234 pounds. He was the Bengals leading rusher this preseason, totaling 156 yards rushing on five yards per carry and a touchdown.

Prior to signing with the Bengals back in 2020, Patrick — who went undrafted in 2019 — was a member of the XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers. During his time there, the Florida State product rushed for 254 yards (4.2 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. He also caught five of his eight targets for 49 yards.

Now, he’ll be providing depth for a 49ers backfield that is in desperate need of healthy bodies.
