Why Oklahoma can cover

Oklahoma has won all eight meetings between the teams in Big 12 competition, and its offense appears to be far more potent than WVU’s. It ranks sixth in the nation in scoring (46.3 per game) and has enviable balance. Sophomore quarterback Spencer Rattler is a top NFL prospect and entered the season as a Heisman candidate after throwing for more than 3,000 yards and 28 TDs as a freshman. He has 761 yards and seven TD passes through three games, and receivers Marvin Mims, Jadon Haselwood and Mario Williams are all capable playmakers.

Haselwood and Williams have 27 receptions and four TDs between them, and Mims averages 21 yards per catch. The Sooners also are set at running back, with Kennedy Brooks (210 yards, three TDs) and Eric Gray (185 yards) getting an even split of carries. Linebacker Nik Bonitto and linemen Perrion Winfrey and Isaiah Thomas have each contributed 2.5 sacks as OU has posted 13 so far, and the defense has forced seven turnovers. The Mountaineers could find it tough to pass against the pressure, and the Sooners allow just 83 yards on the ground (21st in FBS).

Why West Virginia can cover

West Virginia is 7-4-1 against the spread in its past 12 regular-season games and is seeking a third straight win after losing its opener to still-unbeaten Maryland. Quarterback Jarret Doege threw two interceptions in that game, but he has 452 yards with five TDs and just one pick in the past two. Five Mountaineers receivers have at least 100 receiving yards, with two averaging at least 18 yards per catch, and running back Leddie Brown is one of the best in the Big 12. The senior has 265 yards and five TDs in three games after putting up 161 on the ground last week.

Sam James and Winston Wright each have 10 receptions, and James leads the team with 166 yards and three TDs. Sean Ryan and Bryce Ford-Wheaton have a combined 15 catches for 274 yards and two scores. They should be able to find space against an OU pass defense that ranks 90th in the country and yielded 289 yards to the Cornhuskers last week. The Mountaineers are scoring 39 points per game (32nd in FBS) and allowing just 17 (33rd), and the defense has 10 sacks, three by sophomore Jared Bartlett. The Sooners are 1-2 against the spread this season.
