What to Know

A Big 12 battle is on tap between the Texas Longhorns and the Iowa State Cyclones at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they’ll have plenty of motivation to get the ‘W.’

Texas came within a touchdown against the Baylor Bears last week, but they wound up with a 31-24 loss. The Longhorns’ loss shouldn’t obscure the performances of QB Casey Thompson, who passed for two TDs and 280 yards on 38 attempts in addition to picking up 31 yards on the ground, and WR Xavier Worthy, who caught four passes for one TD and 115 yards. One of the most thrilling moments was Worthy’s 63-yard TD reception in the first quarter.

Iowa State suffered a bitter defeat last week, failing to capitalize on an early lead against the West Virginia Mountaineers. Iowa State fell to West Virginia 38-31. The game was a 17-17 toss-up at halftime, but Iowa State was outplayed the rest of the way. Despite the loss, they had strong showings from RB Breece Hall, who rushed for one TD and 167 yards on 24 carries, and QB Brock Purdy, who passed for one TD and 185 yards on 27 attempts in addition to rushing for one TD and 64 yards. That touchdown — a 70-yard rush in the first quarter — was one of the highlights of the matchup.

The Longhorns are expected to lose this next one by 6.5. Now might not be the best time to take Texas against the spread since they’ve let down bettors for the past three consecutive games.

The losses put Texas at 4-4 and Iowa State at 5-3. A pair of defensive stats to keep an eye on: Texas is 224th worst in the nation in rushing touchdowns allowed, with 14 on the season. Iowa State’s defense has more to brag about, as they they enter the contest with only 250.7 yards allowed per game on average, good for 13th best in the nation. So the cards are definitely stacked in their favor.
