On Thursday, Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver, who is white, was alleged to have used the N-word on several occasions, made misogynistic comments in team meetings and also berated coaches at times, according to a report from ESPN’s Baxter Holmes. Following the report, the NBA announced that they would be launching an investigation into the alleged claims against Sarver.
“The allegations contained in today’s ESPN article are extremely serious, and we have directed the Wachtell Lipton law firm to commence a comprehensive investigation,” the league said in a statement. “The NBA and WNBA remain committed to providing a respectful and inclusive workplace for all employees. Once the investigation is completed, its findings will provide the basis for any league action.”
During Friday’s installment of “Nothing Personal with David Samson,” Samson weighed in on the situation and revealed how he would’ve handled it if he were Sarver.
“Robert Sarver should taken to the microphone himself and said: ‘I’m stepping aside from running the team day-to-day. I’m leaving it in the hands of the very capable people that I have because this community and these players deserve a team that can compete for a championship without the distraction that I am currently providing. I will work very closely with Adam Silver to make sure the truth comes out,” Samson said.
Until the findings of this report are investigated, Samson believes that it would be in Sarver’s best interests to step from the team and avoid causing a distraction.
