Manchester United have agreed a six-month deal with Ralf Rangnick to take over as interim manager until the end of the season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking, The Athletic reports and CBS Sports insider Fabrizio Romano confirms

The German will leave his role as head of sports and development with Lokomotiv Moscow to move to Old Trafford with the deal subject to the Russian outfit agreeing to release him from his current contract.

According to co-authors David Ornstein and Laurie Whitwell, United do not anticipate any issues on this front and Rangnick will fill the managerial post for six months before two further years in a consultancy role.

Romano added that the 63-year-old was one of five names on United’s list and that a meeting took place on Monday and that he would help the board in a drectorial role if granted a consultancy contract until 2024 or 2025.

Rangnick will not be in charge for this weekend’s clash with Chelsea due to work permit issues so Michael Carrick will have the chance to add to his UEFA Champions League win over Villarreal CF on Paramount+.

Rangnick has previously managed RB Leipzig, Schalke 04, and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga while he has also successfully overseen the transformation of the Red Bull empire and notably the rise of Leipzig and Salzburg as continental forces.

He also regularly stepped in as RBL manager during his period with the German outfit’s parent organization.

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino is thought to remain the firm favorite to take the manager role full-time.
