The Seattle Seahawks didn’t waste any time getting Adrian Peterson up to speed with their offense, elevating the former MVP running back to their active roster in time for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, the team announced Saturday. Peterson signed with the Seahawks’ practice squad Wednesday, just a week after he was released from the Tennessee Titans.
Seattle has three running backs questionable for the game, as Alex Collins (abdomen), Rashaad Penny (hamstring), and Travis Homer (calf) all received the designation on Friday’s final injury report. Homer and Penny were full participants while Collins was limited, making the move to promote Peterson necessary if Seattle wanted any healthy running running backs outside of DeeJay Dallas.
Collins hasn’t provided much for Seattle since starting running back Chris Carson went on injured reserve with a neck injury. Collins has 101 carries for 395 yards and two touchdowns this season (averaging 3.9 yards per carry) as his volume of carries has decreased each week. Dallas has just 17 carries for 64 yards and a touchdown (3.8 yards per carry).
Peterson has 14,902 career rushing yards, just 368 yards short of passing Barry Sanders for fourth on the all-time list. His 119 rushing touchdowns are fourth on the all-time list, just five away from passing Marcus Allen for third (123). He has the most 50-yard touchdown runs (16) and 60-yard touchdown runs (15) in NFL history. He’s tied with Chris Johnson for the most 70-yard touchdown runs in NFL history (seven).
Peterson holds the NFL record for rushing yards in a game with 296, one of six 200-yard rushing games in his career (tied with O.J. Simpson for the most in league history). His eight 1,000-yard seasons are tied for sixth-most in NFL history and Peterson’s eight seasons of 10-plus rushing touchdowns are tied with Emmitt Smith for second-most in league history.
Peterson had just 27 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown in three games with the Titans prior to his release. He started two games for Tennessee, and may be on his way toward starting in his debut with Seattle.
