The San Francisco Dons won both of their matches against the San Diego Toreros last season (70-62 and 67-51) and are aiming for the same result on Saturday. San Francisco and San Diego will face off in a West Coast battle at 7 p.m. ET at War Memorial Gymnasium. Given that these two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.
The Dons were within striking distance but couldn’t close the gap on Thursday as they fell 79-74 to the Loyola Chicago Ramblers. A silver lining for San Francisco was the play of forward Yauhen Massalski, who had 20 points along with five boards and four blocks.
Meanwhile, San Diego got maybe a little too into the holiday spirit, gifting the UNLV Rebels an easy 80-57 win. Forward Terrell Brown put forth a good effort for the losing side as he had 16 points in addition to eight rebounds.
The losses put San Francisco at 13-2 and the Toreros at 7-6. Two numbers to keep in mind before tip-off: The Dons are stumbling into the contest with the 43rd most turnovers per game in college basketball, having accrued 14.9 on average. San Diego has experienced some struggles of their own as they are 44th worst in college basketball in takeaways, with only 11.4 on average. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
