What to Know
The Butler Bulldogs and the #14 Villanova Wildcats are set to square off in a Big East matchup at noon ET Jan. 16 at Wells Fargo Center. The teams split their matchups last year, with Villanova winning the first 85-66 at home and the Bulldogs taking the second 73-61.
While not quite a landslide, the game between Butler and the Georgetown Hoyas this past Thursday was still a pretty decisive one as Butler wrapped it up with a 72-58 victory on the road. Butler can attribute much of their success to guard Jair Bolden, who had 23 points. Bolden hadn’t helped his team much against the Xavier Musketeers two weeks ago, so this was a nice turnaround for him. Bolden’s points were the most he has had all season.
Meanwhile, Villanova narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Xavier 64-60. The Wildcats’ guard Justin Moore looked sharp as he had 19 points in addition to nine rebounds.
The Bulldogs are the clear underdogs, so they’re hoping it’s the size of the fight that determines this one. Those who got lucky with them against the spread this past Thursday might want to hold off on placing bets this time since the team has yet to string together back-to-back wins against the spread.
Butler is now 9-6 while Villanova sits at 12-4. A couple stats to keep an eye on: Butler is stumbling into the contest with the 27th fewest points per game in college basketball, having accrued only 64 on average. Villanova’s defense has more to brag about, as they they enter the matchup with only 61.5 points allowed per game on average, good for 25th best in college basketball. So the cards are definitely stacked in their favor.
